Season and availability
Prime months are May through September, when the sky cooperates with the color. In the rains the lake stays beautiful but the glacier hides; the price holds year-round.
Worth knowing
Like every big hike in our plans, Humantay never lands on your first Andean day, and the day after it stays deliberately light. The order of days is where a plan earns its keep.
Questions travelers actually ask
- Humantay or Rainbow Mountain — if I can only do one?
- Humantay is shorter, lower and greener: water, glacier, wildflowers. Vinicunca is higher, longer and lunar. Photographers split evenly. If altitude worries you, Humantay is the gentler day.
- Can I combine Humantay and Rainbow Mountain back to back?
- You can, but we'll argue with you. Two pre-dawn starts above 4,000 meters in a row is how travelers lose a third day to exhaustion. We space them with a rest day between.
